The announcement of the worsening public deficit and the recent tensions between Emmanuel Macron and his Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, have lifted the veil on the extent to which the budgetary situation has slipped out of control. Added to this public debt, which many observers now consider to be virtually out of control, is the fact that France continues, year after year, to accumulate record trade balance deficits. While the unemployment rate, now at 7.4%, is relatively low compared to what has prevailed in recent decades, most of France’s macro-economic indicators are more than worrying.
