In August 2026,IFOP conducted a surveyon behalf of its partners, the Cercle de Giverny and Forward Global, of 1,000 French citizens regarding their attitudes toward sustainable businesses, in conjunction with the 8th edition of the Giverny Forum, which took place on September 4, 2026. In addition to the priority initiatives for the next five-year term, the survey addressed issues related to cities and housing, energy and digital technology, mental health, critical infrastructure, water, and science education.
Key Findings of the Study
The French want a government that provides greater protection against new vulnerabilities: climate, water, cybersecurity, and infrastructure.
The French are not asking for less environmental protection; they are asking for environmental policies that protect them.
The French would like to see the next President of the Republic prioritize issues that directly impact the country’s resilience:
49%: adapting cities and housing to climate change;
45%: protection of critical infrastructure;
42%: ensuring sustainable access to water.
More specifically:
On adaptation:
66% wanta “climate habitability certificate” for housing.
On critical infrastructure:
75% would like to organize regional multi-hazard drills involving the public, government agencies, and service providers.
The public accepts the idea that the population must be prepared for major crises rather than assuming that the government will always be able to prevent them from occurring. Three out of four French people would participate in some form of collective crisis training.
On water:
- 84% want large-scale industrial projects to be contingent on future water availability.
- 82% also want large-scale real estate projects to be contingent on available water resources.
- 77% wouldaccept water rates for businesses that vary based on local scarcity and their recycling efforts.
