On the occasion of the Assises nationales de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation, organized by Ouest-France this Tuesday, November 25, 2025, Ifop surveyed the French on their perception of farmers.

The image of farmers remains stable and positive, at the same level as in the last survey, in line with the surge of solidarity generated by the mobilizations of winter 2023-2024. The debates surrounding the Duplomb law have not had the same impact on this image as the major agricultural crises or health scandals: probably because they have faded into the background, behind other topical issues such as the political crisis or economic and geopolitical instability. tA majority of French people (56%) say they understand the demands of the farming community for the Duplomb law to facilitate their work, even if this understanding remains politically divided.

On the environmental front, since a low point reached at the time of the 2015 agricultural crisis, support for the idea that farmers are respectful of the environment has risen sharply to 64%, +20 points on 2015. What’s more, a relative majority (60%) applauds farmers’ efforts to change their practices and protect the environment. In other words, despite events and debates that have agitated the news, a persistent opinion is taking root that farmers, in the long term, are committed to more virtuous practices today.

Although down on 2024, a significant proportion – 4 out of 10 French people – still consider farmers’ remuneration to be very inadequate. Moreover, a majority would accept a rise in food prices to guarantee farmers a decent income. However, this awareness of the difficulties faced by farmers is only marginally reflected in terms of attractiveness: recommendations for a career in agriculture remain in the minority (15%), despite the fact that almost two-thirds of French people fear there will be a shortage of farmers in the coming years to feed the population.

Against this backdrop, two clear priorities emerge for the farming world in the eyes of the French: better remuneration for farmers (71%) and combating foreign competition deemed unfair (69%).
