Collection methodology

The survey was carried out among a sample of 1,001 managers of very small businesses (VSEs) with between 0 and 19 employees. Companies with annual sales of less than €50,000 were not surveyed as part of this study. However, it does include auto-entrepreneurs.

The sample was reasoned and then reduced to its real weight during processing, based on the following criteria: company sector of activity, company size, region of establishment.

Interviews were conducted by telephone between April 3 and 17, 2026.

Despite a slight upturn in optimism about the general business climate in France and confidence in the French government, VSE bosses’ optimism about their own business continued to erode in the first quarter of 2026, against a backdrop of international crisis and rising energy prices.

Hiring and job losses stabilize in the first quarter of 2026, with an increase in the number of vacant positions.

Although very small business trade takes place mainly within European borders, the multiple conflicts in the Middle East are of concern to company directors, especially when their company is an exporter.

VSE managers anticipate the negative repercussions of the international situation on their ecosystems, and 90% are taking or intend to take measures to protect themselves. They also expect support from the government, primarily in the form of lower social charges.
