Do the French want their mayors and intercommunal presidents to be re-elected? What criteria and issues will be at stake in the next municipal and community elections in 2026?
In the next elections, will inter-municipal issues be able to make their mark in a public debate generally dominated by hyper-proximity communal issues?
To coincide with the 34th convention of intercommunalités (October 16-18), the association Intercommunalités de France commissioned Ifop to carry out a major survey on the relationship between the French and their intercommunalités, their elected representatives and the prospects for the renewal of their executives in the next elections.
Carried out with an exceptionally large sample (5,027 people), this study, which measures the relationship between the French and their local authorities in a rather tense context with the government (e.g.: budget savings, water and sanitation responsibilities, etc.), shows that support for the intercommunal model remains strong, but that there are significant disparities between different types of territory.
