In March 2026,Ifop conducteda survey on behalf of its partner Welfaire among 800 self-employed individuals in metropolitan France regarding their mental health.
Key findings of the study:
- Overall, self-employed workers view their current professional situation positively and value the flexibility in how they organize their work.
- However, self-employed workers are more critical—and even concerned—about the economic and political situation in France and emphasize that, due to their greater autonomy, they are more vulnerable to economic uncertainties than salaried employees.
- While the self-employed consider themselves to be in good physical and mental health, the demands inherent in this status nevertheless take a toll on their psychological well-being. Stress, mental strain, and the difficulty of coping alone with the demands of their work lead more than one-third of them to consider slowing down their work pace or even giving up self-employment to better protect their well-being.
