With just over a year to go before the presidential election, Ifop for Paris Match asked the French how they view Gérald Darmanin.
Gérald Darmanin enjoys a solid but divisive position in public opinion. One French person in two (50%) believes he can embody the right and center in the next presidential election, on a par with Édouard Philippe (50%), and higher than Bruno Retailleau (46%) and Gabriel Attal (43%). The current Minister of the Interior has thus established himself in the top quartet of personalities deemed capable of uniting this political space.
In terms of his image, 46% of French people consider him competent and 45% courageous. On the other hand, there are still doubts as to whether he is in touch with the day-to-day lives of the French: 66% feel that he does not understand the lives of the French and 70% that he is not close to their concerns.
This polarization is reflected in declared candidacy intentions: only 31% of French people would like him to run in the next presidential election, including 41% of those aged 65 and over, compared with 69% who would not. His base appears very marked on the right: 68% support among those close to Renaissance and 57% among those from the Republicans, while opposition is massive on the left, particularly among La France insoumise supporters (90%).
