Ifop for TF1, LCI and Le Figaro polled French people on their perception of Bruno Retailleau, President of the French Republican Party and presidential candidate. A mixed picture emerges: the most frequently cited positive attributes are “serious” (58%), “hard-working” (57%), “dynamic” (50%), “endowed with natural authority” (50%) and “courageous” (48%). Negative traits, however, are also present: “opportunistic” (58%), “arrogant” (47%), “intolerant” (44%) and “aggressive” (40%).nnIn terms of political image, two perceptions coexist: Bruno Retailleau is primarily associated with the idea of “defending traditional values” (54%). But he also retains – as Frédéric Dabi points out – the image deficits traditionally associated with right-wing candidates since Nicolas Sarkozy’s candidacy, rather than with him in particular. On sovereign issues, the perception of “ability” is higher: he is judged “capable of reducing illegal immigration” (46%), “competent” (46%) and “capable of ensuring French security” (45%).nn31% of French people consider Bruno Retailleau to have the makings of a President of the Republic, 7% of them completely, while 69% do not share this opinion. There are clear differences according to partisan proximity, with 76% of LR supporters in favor, compared with 12% of LFI supporters, 23% of PS supporters, 28% of ecologists, 33% of Renaissance supporters and 36% of RN supporters.
