An Ifop poll for Marianne examined which second-round matchups in the 2027 presidential election the French would most like to see.
The first key finding of this survey is that the most desired scenarios consistently pit a candidate from the centrist bloc against a candidate from the National Rally. The top three matchups are Édouard Philippe versus Jordan Bardella, preferred by 45% of the French public; Édouard Philippe versus Marine Le Pen, preferred by 39%; and Gabriel Attal versus Jordan Bardella, also preferred by 39%.
Next are the runoff elections pitting La France Insoumise against the National Rally. Thus, 36% of the French public would like to see a matchup between Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Jordan Bardella (including 60% of La France Insoumise voters or supporters and 50% of National Rally voters or supporters, compared to only 15% among those aligned with the centrist bloc). The Jean-Luc Mélenchon–Marine Le Pen matchup garners a comparable level of support: 35% of the French public favors it (63% of La France Insoumise voters or supporters and 46% of National Rally supporters).
“Three-quarters of the French public do not want the traditional second round of the Fifth Republic. Classic left-right matchups are what people want least today,” according to Frédéric Dabi, who anticipates “a presidential election marked by renewal and a break with the past.” In fact, only 26% would prefer a Raphaël Glucksmann–Édouard Philippe or Raphaël Glucksmann–Bruno Retailleau matchup, and just 23% would prefer a François Hollande–Édouard Philippe runoff.
