The day after Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly, the various left-wing parties sealed an electoral and programmatic alliance called the Nouveau Front Populaire (NFP). The choice of this name is not accidental. In the imagination of the left, the Popular Front is a shared and highly valued reference. What’s more, the threat of the far right coming to power, which weighed heavily in favor of this new alliance (with the RN garnering 33% of the vote on the evening of the European elections), was already behind the formation of the first Front Populaire. The riots of February 6, 1934, and the activism of the nationalist leagues had in fact provoked a republican defense reaction in the various left-wing parties and organizations, which led two years later to the formation of the Front Populaire. Taking up this glorious name was a reminder that victory at the time was only possible thanks to the rallying of the entire left.
